Osteopathy

Woman with back pain being treated by an Osteopath

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that balances the motion of your joints, muscles and fascia. It’s rooted in the understanding of human anatomy and the natural principles that govern it. Systems within the body influence and communicate with one another, making each part important to the body’s function as a whole. Physical strain and injuries can affect the body’s ability to properly deliver nutrients, remove waste and can impact the function of nerves and blood vessels.

By removing physical strains through manual treatment, the body can heal and regulate itself. Osteopathy provides an opportunity for the body to maintain its balance and express its natural state of health.

Treatment

Osteopathic treatment decreases stressors in the body allowing it to move, breathe, and function optimally by equalizing the movement between different parts.

Treatment is based on a patient’s individual needs. Each treatment is different from one person to another and the same patient will likely never experience the same treatment twice. This is what makes osteopathy effective – as your body changes, so do your treatments.

Osteopathy can improve the symptoms of:

  • Headaches

  • Back and neck pain

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Work and sports related injuries

  • Digestive troubles

  • Sinus congestion

  • Menstrual pain

  • And can assist with general maintenance

Treatments are generally between 30 and 45 minutes and include an intake, assessment, treatment and re-assessment following the treatment. The amount of treatment depends on the issue and desired outcome. Issues that are deeply integrated into your body or movement pattern can take time to change, while other issues may be resolved quickly. On average, positive change can be noticed within 3–5 treatments.
